Recipe: Sweet Soy Sauce Chicken (紅燒雞翼)/Swiss Chicken (瑞士雞翼)

I was first introduced to soy sauce chicken wings by my friend who loved this dish. Whenever I was in Kuala Lumpur, we will go to this café; Hui Lau Shan (許留山), and without fail, she will order this dish. The wings were infused with the aromatically sweet, savoury, sticky coating of red-ish soy sauce with a subtle hint of spice and ginger. This dish is a classic and popular dish in Hong Kong and is known as Swiss Chicken Wings (or Sweet Chicken Wings). Mind you, this dish has nothing to do with Swiss cuisine but has an interesting story behind it. The story goes like this, there was a Western customer who went into a restaurant and was asking about the chicken wings on the menu. The Chinese waiter that served him was poor in the English language and tried to explain that it came with a ‘ sweet sauce ‘. The Westerner mistook that as ‘ Swiss sauce ” and as it sounded familiar, he decided to order it.  Hence, the name …

“Comparison is the Thief of Joy” – Theodore Roosevelt

*Watch till the end of the video*  ( I promise, it’s worth your time ) The way we perceive ourselves and the way we think other’s perceive us is what we call ‘Body Image’. Growing up in a generation where the media sets the standard of beauty has definitely brought more harm than good to all those young boys and girls that are going through the confusing stage of adolescence. The issue with body image doesn’t just magically disappear after puberty, it stays on for however long we allow it to. This video has definitely brought to light the importance of self-acceptance. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, we have to learn how to respect and love ourselves in order to stop allowing negativity into our lives. The internet definitely needs more videos like these to spread the positive message of self-love!  I hope this video has blown your mind as much as it has done for me! Stay positive, peeps!

17 Songs Every 90s Kid Should Know

Raise your hands, if you were born in the 90’s and grew up listening to songs from the millenniums! As a 90’s kid, I take pride in the quality of music that was popular during our generation. We had such talented artist who made amazing music. Let me take you down the memory lane with 17 songs you almost forgot. No worries, you can thank me later. 1. Backstreet Boys – As Long as You Love Me Before Justin Bieber and One direction even made it to this planet, we had Backstreet Boys! Backstreet Boys were one of the first few boy bands that made it big during the 2000’s. 2. N’sync – Bye Bye Bye Just like the Backstreet Boys, N’Sync was a big craze during this period of time. N’Sync and Backstreet Boys were always going head to head when it came to their fan base and music. Honestly speaking, I am a total N’sync girl.. I mean come on, how can you resist that cute baby face of Justin Timberlake and that sexy demeanor of …

October Favourites 2014

First of all, I can’t believe how quickly October ended. October has been such a roller coaster ride for me. It has been difficult trying to juggle assignments, work, life, and also staying healthy all at once (life of an Uni student). BUT with the help of a few things that I consider my ‘happy pills’, I have managed to retain my sanity. Secondly, WELCOME NOVEMBER! In this monthly favourite, I have chosen (in no particular order) 5 of my top favourite obsessions in the month of October.  1) Savvy Ultra Matte Lip Colour  I went into Priceline a while ago to casually look around and kill time while I was on my work break. I told myself that I won’t buy anything but, I came across this lip product which was on sale and immediately, had the strongest urge to try it. I usually gravitate towards brighter colours when it comes to lip products but, somehow this nude-brown lip product caught my attention. To be honest, I have dry lips and since this product …

“One of the greatest contributing factors to overall happiness is how much gratitude you show”

I recently stumbled across an incredible Youtube channel called ‘SoulPancake‘ that makes really interesting videos focusing on issues that people go through in life and a little guide on how to get through it. The interesting part is how these videos are conceptualised and brought to attention. Everybody goes through ups and downs in life. But how we fend for ourselves through these dark times determines the true strength that we possess. The video that caught my attention the most from this channel was “The Science of Happiness – An experiment in Gratitude“. “Psychologists have scientifically proven that one of the greatest contributing factors to overall happiness in your life is how much gratitude you show.” Julian Huguet (always trust the man in the lab coat) At first, I wasn’t too keen on watching the whole video. I had the attention span of a goldfish and also I wasn’t feeling the best. But I’m glad I pushed myself to finish this video. The experiment starts off with few volunteers filling up a questionnaire to test their …
