Food Review: The Modern Eatery (Mount Lawley)

Their sister branch in Freo has long been one of my favourite Japanese places. So when I was invited to visit their Mount Lawley outlet, I was ecstatic. The Modern Eatery specialises in Aburi sushi, where the top of the fish is lightly cooked with a blow torch whilst the rest of it remains raw. Their decor consist of a sleek and minimalist style that holds the whole place together.

Crunchy Salad ($12) – Salad Mix, Lettuce, Onion, Capsicum with Sesame Dressing and Sweet Potato Fries on top

Now all my friends can attest to this, I’m not the type of girl who goes to a restaurant and orders a salad. So if I said that I really liked the salad, I REALLY liked the salad. The sesame dressing and the mix of vegetables blends really well. It was super refreshing and perfect for the hot day. But my favourite part of the salad was the tiny little sweet potato fries at the top! It’s so yummy that I’m even considering ordering this salad the next time I come back. Oops. It is a pretty sizable portion and I recommend that you share this among 2-4 people if you want to save space for the rest of their yummy food!

Hotate ($14) – Aburi Hokkaido Sea Scallops with Butter & Soy, Hamachi ($11) – South Australian Hiramasa Kingfish and Salmon ($9.5) – New Zealand King Salmon

Next we had a combination of 3 different kinds of sashimi. I like how the sashimi is cut and served fresh to order. It was my first time trying the Aburi scallops and I enjoyed how the smokey flavour tasted with the natural sweetness of the scallops. The kingfish was cut up in nice generous slices and was really fresh. But the ultimate star of the plate would have to be the king salmon! Their salmon is sourced for New Zealand rather than Tasmania so it has a smoother and more buttery texture. Just thinking about it now makes me crave more. Definitely coming back for more of that salmon!

Aburi Chicken ($15) – Grilled Chicken with Sesame Seeds, Mayo and Aburi Chicken Sauce

This is one dish that you must eat whilst it is fresh from the kitchen as it tastes best when it is hot. The chicken was tender at every bite and the smokey flavour, the seasonings and the mayo complimented each other perfectly!

Salmon Oshi ($16) – Pressed Salmon with Signature Aburi Sauce & Sweet Soy

This is one of the dishes that The Modern Eatery is well know for. Their signature Salmon Oshi lives up to its hype. I think they have perfected the ratio of rice to fish as neither overpowers the other and it is a perfect one-biter. This really melts in your mouth and brings you to sushi heaven! A definite must try!
