Raise your hands, if you were born in the 90’s and grew up listening to songs from the millenniums!

As a 90’s kid, I take pride in the quality of music that was popular during our generation. We had such talented artist who made amazing music. Let me take you down the memory lane with 17 songs you almost forgot. No worries, you can thank me later.

1. Backstreet Boys – As Long as You Love Me

Before Justin Bieber and One direction even made it to this planet, we had Backstreet Boys! Backstreet Boys were one of the first few boy bands that made it big during the 2000’s.

2. N’sync – Bye Bye Bye

Just like the Backstreet Boys, N’Sync was a big craze during this period of time. N’Sync and Backstreet Boys were always going head to head when it came to their fan base and music. Honestly speaking, I am a total N’sync girl.. I mean come on, how can you resist that cute baby face of Justin Timberlake and that sexy demeanor of JC Chasez. The boys from N’sync has definitely driven me crazy for a long period of time. It’s safe to say that my N’Sync days are officially over but I still have much love for Justin Timberlake.

3. Destiny’s Child – Bills Bills Bills

These Bootylicious ladies have shattered the glass ceiling and proved that women too can be strong and Independent with such tracks like; Independent women, Survivor, Girl, and also Bills Bills Bills.

4. Britney Spears – Stronger

This song is one of my favorite post break-up anthem. I was probably around 9 years old when this song came out, and it didn’t mean much to me at that time. But when I went through my first break-up only years later, this song made a lot of sense to me. Thank you, Britney, I am definitely stronger than yesterday. It’s nice to know that there was a time where Britney Spears wrote songs with lyrical depth and not just to breakthrough the mainstream charts.

5. Christina Aguilera – Beautiful

“You are beautiful, no matter what they say, words can’t bring you down”. Christina Aguilera is known for her evolution of raunchy clothing and behavior but one thing that she has managed to sustain over the years is her music. Christina is famous for her ballets and music that explores different levels of emotions and that is something that I have always admired of her. Rumor has it, she’s a complete diva, nevertheless her voice has remained flawless.

6. Matchbox Twenty – Unwell

Matchbox 20 only had a couple of hits but their most successful track was “Unwell” which is also one of my favorite songs. The band is known for their somber and emotionally depth songs but in the recent years, they have tried to revamp their image and music to keep up with the industry which then backfired because many of their fans felt like they weren’t being authentic and genuine with the quality of music that they were making.

7. Kelly Clarkson – Breakaway

If there’s anything that I had learnt from this song is that I have to “spread my wings and learn how to fly, I’ll do what it takes till I touch the sky”.. I remember playing this song on repeat whilst packing to move to a new home and school. Somehow, I felt like I could identify with the kid in the music video..

8. Missy Elliot – Work it

Remember that time when baggy jackets and sweat pants were the hottest trend around? Yeah.. I didn’t know anyone who wore it better than this lady over here.. “Is it worth it, let me work it. I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it”.. You know you’re a 90’s kid when you vividly remember seeing Missy Elliot’s music videos being played on MTV every other hour. Up till this very day, I still have her songs on repeat!

9. Nelly Furtado – I’m Like a Bird

Oh, come on! You have to know this one. Maybe it’s a little biased for me to say this but I feel like this could be every 90’s kid go-to jam! Nelly furtado is the epitome of what the music from the millennium sounded like. Everything about her songs and her music videos depicted exactly how people were back then. Every time I watched her music video, it would lead me down memory lane (I was probably 5 or 6 when this song came out).

10. Gwen Stefani – Hollaback Girl

My love for bananas and.. well, using the term “Bananas” may have developed around the time when this song was released. Gwen leaves her grungy past with No Doubt to embark on a solo journey into the Harajuku world and pop music with her catchy tunes such as: “Hollaback Girl”, “If I was a Rich Girl” and also “What You Waiting For”. Although it was a culture shock to see her swing from a very rocker chick look into a preppy cheerleader, her new music made waves and gave everyone a chance to see her in a new light.

11.  Blink 182 – I Miss You

I can’t be the only one who was completely bummed by the fact that the band broke up in early 2005.. BUT fret not because it has reported that they have gotten back together to make more sweet sweet music and spread their legacy.

12. Vanessa Carlton – Thousand Miles 

If you have watched the movie “White Chicks” then you would know how iconic this song is.. Haha. In this song, Vanessa Carlton dazzles us with her beautiful, soft and soothing voice (which many of us cannot take seriously anymore).. This is one of those songs that automatically brings you back to that one memory.. that is the car scene with Terry Crews and his inner teenage white girl.

13. Sixpence None The Richer – Kiss Me 

This is one of the sweetest songs of all time. I know many people who still find their way back to this beautiful ballad everytime they feel the butterflies in their tummy. I admit that this song still gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling every time I listen to it. I just can’t help it, such simple words put together means so much more than anything.

14. Pink- Get The Party Started

Pink brought rebellion to the world of music during this time. Her rowdy behaviour and killer vocals gained much attention amongst teenagers. She reached out to a different scope of audiences. People who weren’t into Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, formed a bigger connection with Pink. This wild child gained instant popularity in the music world because she brought something completely fresh and new with her personality and also her music.

 15. Eminem – Without Me

All the cool kids knew every line to his rhymes. ALL THE COOL KIDS. It didn’t matter if you didn’t like hip hop at that point of time because Eminem was blatantly exposed to everyone and anyone. He is after all the rap god and the legend.

16. Goo Goo Dolls – Iris

If you’re a 90’s kid then I guarantee this song would be one of the few songs that you would choose to sing on a karaoke night, belting out the chorus to this song with full emotions and forgetting how horrendous your voice sounds like. Yeap.. we have all been there.

17. Avril Lavinge – Complicated 

To end this list, we have the Punk pop princess herself, Avril Lavinge representing the angsty teenagers of the 2000’s with her tracks like ; sk8ter boi, complicated, nobody’s home and girlfriend. I have to admit that I went through a major Avril Lavinge phase where I dressed exactly like her and carried around a small notebook that had detailed information about Avril and the day she was born, the food she ate, the artist that she liked and also the number of pets she had. I was 13 at that time, cut me some slack, I wasn’t the coolest kid around.. Well at least now I’m aware of that.. Haha
